Twenty-six years ago, a tragic dormitory fire at Seton Hall University forever changed countless lives. Three students, Aaron Karol, Frank Caltabilota, Jr., and John Giunta, lost their lives, and dozens more were injured in a fire that exposed devastating gaps in college dormitory fire safety.
Today, we are encouraged to share meaningful progress.
Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. and Congressman Josh Gottheimer have introduced the Seton Hall Fire Victims Remembrance Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at establishing national fire safety standards for college dormitories across the United States.
Seton Hall University recently unveiled a plaque to commemorate The Aspiring Kindness Foundation’s support for the University.
At the ceremony, Tara Hart from Seton Hall (Assistant Vice President for Strategy & Administration) along with Diana Dorsey and Brian Ruark presented the plaque stating that it stands as more than a symbol of generosity—it represents a legacy of resilience, compassion, and profound kindness.
The Aspiring Kindness Foundation was born from tragedy, yet it has transformed loss into light. In memory of Aaron and the lives touched by the Boland Hall fire of January 2000, this foundation has opened doors for countless Seton Hall students—empowering them to serve as first responders while pursuing their dreams.
Through the Aspiring Kindness Foundation Scholarship, students like Justin Tsai, founder of Tsai Mobile Health, and Zil Modi, now a Ph.D. candidate at Texas A&M, have turned opportunity into innovation and leadership. Their journeys remind us that kindness creates ripples of good that extend far beyond what we can see.
This plaque is a testament to the enduring impact of friendship, generosity, and the power of compassion in action. Aaron’s legacy lives on in every student who carries forward the light of opportunity.
Due to your generosity over the years, we have raised over $400,000 since inception!
Since we started this journey in 2010, 37 grants totaling $320,000 have been awarded to local first responders, hospitals, and Seton Hall University, where we have created and funded the new Seton Hall First Responders Scholarship.
The Aspiring Kindness Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public corporation to provide financial assistance to support and enhance the abilities of emergency responders and service providers. Additionally, we plan to support those organizations dedicated to serving the memory of those who have given themselves in our time of need and support those individuals’ families’ needs.
